The Tank, Art Gallery NSW

In a transformative project for the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Lux Imperium was engaged to reinvent Gallery 8—“The Tank,” a 2,200m² subterranean WWII-era oil tank—into a cutting-edge exhibition space for immersive, light-driven experiences.

Delivered as a full turnkey solution, the project included concept design, lighting supply, custom rigging, installation, programming, and ongoing technical support. The result was a highly adaptable, future-proof system built around a motorized, DMX-controlled track runner, enabling dynamic repositioning of high-performance LED luminaires across the cavernous, column-filled space.

The lighting infrastructure debuted in the inaugural exhibition The End of Imagination by Adrián Villar Rojas, where it played an integral role in storytelling through light and shadow. Its versatility was further showcased in Volume 2024, a multimedia festival featuring lasers, live music, and digital artistry by Flume and Jonathan Zawada. With wireless control, VR-integrated programming, and Unreal Engine compatibility, the system reflects an innovative fusion of theatrical, architectural, and interactive lighting. The Tank now serves as a globally unique platform for large-scale, artist-led installations and performances.
