The RJ Phipps Performance Centre is the dedicated performing arts venue of Hills Grammar, an independent, co-educational school located in Kenthurst, NSW. Opened in 2011, the venue serves as a hub for school performances, assemblies, and events. After more than a decade of service, the venue’s original lighting, primarily discharge luminaires had reached their end of life, with failing fittings contributing to reduced light levels.
Lux Imperium delivered a comprehensive venue technical upgrade encompassing lighting, AV, and networking to modernise the venue and expand its capabilities. Our scope included the supply and installation of new Anolis energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the auditorium and foyer, featuring full RGBW colour control to enhance the diverse range of events and performances staged in the venue.
An ETC EchoTouch lighting control system was installed, replacing the previous control system and significantly expanding the functionality of the space. The system was integrated with the venue’s production lighting console, allowing operators to incorporate the colour-changing house lighting into their shows for expanded creative possibilities.
In addition, we enhanced the venue’s AV infrastructure with a Q-SYS system upgrade, adding touchscreen control of the existing powered window blinds, window openers, and the stage curtain—streamlining operations into a unified interface. A new wireless assisted hearing system was installed providing high-quality stereo audio to a set of wireless receivers and compatible hearing aids. A video system upgrade introduced a PTZ camera and additional web streaming capabilities, enabling the school to broadcast events with ease.
The result is a modernised performance centre with intuitive control, enhanced AV capabilities, and the creative flexibility to support the school’s performing arts program for years to come.
